As you work toward preparing your house for another Colorado winter, one of the most important considerations is whether the siding needs to be replaced. Warping, cracking, mold growth and damage to interior walls are all signs you should have your siding assessed by a professional.
Vinyl was first introduced as an exterior cladding material in the 1960s. It grew in popularity over the years, becoming the most common siding material in the United States by 1995. Vinyl remains the number one siding choice for homeowners to this day.
There are many reasons why vinyl siding installation is so popular in Colorado and across the country. The top three reasons include the following:
Vinyl Siding is Affordable
If you’re looking for a cost-effective way to replace your siding, vinyl is the way to go. It has the lowest installation cost of an exterior siding material. It also requires very little maintenance, saving you time and money down the road. Choosing insulated vinyl even improves your home’s energy efficiency, saving you money on utility bills in every season for years to come.
Vinyl Siding is Durable
As a Colorado resident, you know the weather can be quite erratic here. From dry summer heat and hail storms to ice and snow in the winter, your siding must be able to stand up to all types of weather conditions.
Thanks to its impressive durability, vinyl is the perfect solution for withstanding Colorado weather. Insulated vinyl siding boasts the important ability to drain and evaporate moisture, thus helping to prevent mold problems and allowing your home to breathe. This feature improves indoor air quality and the energy performance of the wall assembly.
A unique design and manufacturing process even helps vinyl withstand impacts from baseballs and Frisbees when your kids play in the yard. This prevents the siding from denting, which helps retain the beauty of your home’s exterior for years.
Vinyl Siding has Long-Lasting Color
Many other types of siding require paint to achieve the color you want. Vinyl is different. This material comes in a broad array of colors directly from the manufacturer, allowing you to pick the hue you want on day one and enjoy long-lasting color for years to come.
Choosing vinyl means no more chipping paint, dealing with home exterior maintenance, or paying to have your home repainted. This makes vinyl perfect if you want to avoid regular home improvement projects just to keep the siding looking presentable.

I have a home with vinyl siding. Over the years several vertical streaks have shown up under a couple of vinyl windows that were installed at the same time as the siding. I have tried power washing them and it doesn’t do anything. Do you have a product or a suggestion on how I might be able to get the streaks off?

Hi Joe, Just as you did, water is the best starting point. Most vinyl manufacturers will recommend non-invasive cleaners, such as dish soap first before moving to something stronger. In order to retain your product warranty, I’d recommend checking with the vinyl manufacturer before using anything other than water or general dish soap. Let me know how it goes!
